The papers consist of documents relating to the career of Peterson as a mine engineer, manager, and executive with anthracite and bituminous coal companies in Pennsylvania. Although the chronology of the collection ranges from 1899-1974, the latter part of his career spent at the Northwestern Mining and Exchange Company receives the most coverage. There are production cost sheets, business correspondence, and memoranda from his work at the Hudson Coal Company and Northwestern Mining, as well as correspondence and pocket diaries pertaining to labor management relations, mine mechanization, and work and safety conditions in Pennsylvania's coal-mining industry.
